Landscape
of Veliki Tabor
Peaceful
landscape of Hrvasko Zagorje, i.e., Croatian Zagorje on the North-West
of Croatia.
Sleeping
beauty - Veliki Tabor early in the morning.
U
krajnjem dijelu sjeverozapadnog područja Hrvatskog Zagorja, pokraj
mjesta Desinića na prekrasnom brežuljku, smješten
je
utvrđeni dvor VELIKI TABOR koji prema ocjeni UNESCO-a pripada
najvišoj kategoriji spomenika.
Đuro
Szabo, opisujući
Veliki Tabor i
okolicu, ne štedi najljepših riječi, a njemu se
pridružuje bard hrvatske gradbene kulture
akademik Andre
Mohorovičić. I zaista, impresivna slika koju nam Dvor pruža sa svih
strana, a isto tako i interijer Dvora, ostavlja
na
posjetitelja neizbrisiv dojam. Tko ga samo jednom posjeti, uvijek će se
njemu vraćati. Nadmorska visina od 334 m. omogućila
je punu
insolaciju i svježinu ozračja, a debeli zidovi pohranjuju ugodnu
temperaturu u ljetnim mjesecima. Zimi
pak snježni pokrov čini ga još ljupkijim i
romantičnijim.
Jedna
u XV. i XVI. stoljeću, a današnja ulazna vrata i taj cijeli
trakt građen je oko 1820. godine. Valja pripomenuti da
Dvor
ima cca. 3340
kvadratnih metara.

Veliki Tabor, a
fortified castle
located on a beautiful hill near the locality of Desinić, dominating
the southwestenmost part of Hrvatsko Zagorje, counts among historical
monuments of utmost category according to UNESCO classification.
Đuro Szabo, Croatian
conservator and museologist did not guard his words in describing the
beauty of Veliki Tabor, nor did Andre Mohorovieia, academican and bard
of Croatian building culture, who joined the commendation. Indeed, the
outstanding architectural and picturesque appel of the Castle shall be
returning to it for ever more. Hight of 334 meters above sea level
enables full insolation and freshness of atmosphere, while the thick
walls store confortable cool in summer months. In winter though, the
snow blankeet ads to the Castle's grace and romance.
There is a theory
that the Castle stands on top of an island of what was once the
Panonian Sea. Another theory suggests that where the Castle stands
today there was a Roman fortress in the 2nd century.
The fact is that the
pentagonal tower was built in the 12th century, while the semicircular
towers, which render complete the beauty of the Castle, where built in
the 15th and 16th centuries. The present entrance door and the whole
admission area, were built round 1820. It is worth mentioning that the
Castle occupies around 3340 m2.

Saving
the pillars of
Veliki Tabor castle...

This was the very last moment for saving Veliki Tabor, and Josip
Štimac did it.

During the 1945-1990 communist ex-Yugoslav period, the Castle was
neglected
to the point that tons and tons of garbage were left in the courtyard
of Veliki Tabor.

Without the efforts of Josip Štimac and anonymous donators
in
the 1990s, there
would be nothing left for successful restauration of the Castle.
A short overview about Veliki Tabor was available in about
twelve
languages, including Chinese

A short overview about Veliki Tabor presented in Chinese langauge,
under the initiative of Mr. Josip Štimac.
The
translation
from Croatian into Chinese was made by Mrs. Lü Ke Feng,
Associate
Professor, lector of
Chinese language at the Faculty of Arts and Letters (Filozofski fakultet) of the
University of Zagreb, and her
name can be seen in the last line of the above translation. She also
visited the Castle, and had a friendly talk with Mr. Josip
Štimac, in which Professor Vladimir
Ćepulić was interpreter. Mrs.
Lü Ke
Feng is Associate Professor at the International Pedagogical Faculty of
the Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, P.R. China.
