Kristian Krekovic in Sweden, 1948-1950Darko Zubrinic, Zagreb, Croatia, 2007 Here we collected some of the works of art by Kristian Krekovic during the time of two or three years that he spent in Sweden, upon invitation of King Gustav Vth in 1948. Krekovic was there with his wife Sina. He has been invited in order to make portraits of the King and of the Royal family, but till now we have no information about these portraits. Our attempts to find any of the portraits by contacting the of the Royal Court in Stockholm were unsuccessful. We obtained negative answers to our inquiries. However, it was by the end of 2008 that the Society Amigos del Museo Krekovic in Palma de Mallorca published a photo of the portrait: Gustav V, Swedish King, portrayed by Krekovic in Stockholm in 1948, source www.kristiankrekovic.com According to Krekovic's published testimonies (see e.g. the monograph [Gaspar Sabater], or the master thesis [Ingeborg Möller Rizo]), he indeed portrayed the King himself. Furthermore, Krekovic recounted how he decided to make just a rough sketch of King's portrait first, who at that time was already an old man, at the age of 90. But the King, to Krekovic's amazment, grabbed one of his legs with his hands, and placed it around his neck! Afterwards Krekovic demenaged to Malmö on the south of Sweden, where he portrayed his friend August Schmitz with his family, an Italian ambassador Ake Lindahl, and others. Krekovic also sketched a portrait of a famous Swedish writer Axel Munthe, when he was in a hospital (this sketch can be seen in the monograph [Gaspar Sabater]). Below we can see two portraits of Mr. August Schmitz (1889-1955) by Kristian Krekovic. They got acquainted and made friends in Italy in 1946-47 when Schmitz worked there. At that time he was a director Malmö. The first portrait is from Milano. They were in frequent contacts in Sweden when Kristian and Sina lived in Malmö. Krekovic portrayed the whole family of Schmitz there (8 persons) on large format (cca 1 x 1½ m). The second portrait of August Schmitz was made in Malmö probably in 1952. These portraits are exhibited on this we by permission of Mr. Arne Schmitz, the son of Mr. August Schmitz.
